NERVE PAIN

While all pain is transmitted to the brain by nerves, "neuropathic pain" refers to pain conditions that arise from damage to nerves or diseases that specifically affect the nervous system. The number of nerve endings found in the head and facial region are more than on any part of the human body, making it very vulnerable to injury and damage. Orofacial nerve pain commonly includes Trigeminal Neuralgia, Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia, Atypical Odontalgia, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, and Burning Mouth Syndrome.

What are the symptoms of Nerve Pain?

  • Electric shock-like pain, aching, burning, or tingling
  • Numbness or loss of sensation in the affected area
  • Mere light touch on the affected area (e.g., cheek, lips, teeth, or scalp) can trigger pain (Allodynia)
  • The symptoms will usually be in the area supplied by the injured nerve
  • The pain may happen spontaneously or be triggered by normally non-painful light touch or hot/cold stimulus
